This course will help you specialise in the aged care industry by allowing you to develop key skills and knowledge needed to fulfil the critical functions of aged care as care givers for seniors and elderly individuals in your community or in registered home care facilities in Australia.

You’ll gain knowledge and experience in providing support to older people with complex needs, and working with groups of older people including training in palliative and dementia care, falls prevention and interventions for clients at risk, elderly care health and hygiene and support independence and wellbeing.

This qualification will prepare you for the roles such as Aged Care Activity Worker, Care Service Team Leader, Care Supervisor (Aged Care), Personal care worker, Personal Care giver, Assistant Hostel Supervisor, Personal care assistant and Residential Care Officer.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no prerequisites, however it is preferred that students:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have sound language and literacy skills (at least Year 10 English, or equivalent)
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Must undertakeLanguage, Literacy and Numeracy test (LLN) :
  • Oral communication – a learner will be able to use and respond to spoken language including some unfamiliar material within a variety of contexts.
  • Numeracy and mathematics – a learner will be able to recognise and use a variety of conventions and symbolism of formal mathematics
  • Due to the physical requirements of this course, the student must be physically fit.
  • Commitment to completing the mandatory 120 hourspractical placement (unpaid).
  • Ability to obtain a clear National Police Check at the student’s cost.
  • This course is not offered to international students

Pre-training Review

All student must undertake pre-training review prior to the enrolment which aims to identify their training needs through questions on previous education or training, relevance of the courses to student, basic computing skills and interview conducted by Global International College enrolment officer. Interview also aims to identify possible CT/RPL opportunities, confirm oral communication skills. Through pre-training review, student will demonstrate that they have necessary skills to successfully complete the course.


A range of assessment methods will be used to assess required skills and knowledge for each unit of competency. These may include but not limited to may be case studies, written or verbal questioning, role plays, observations and practical demonstration. Students will be notified in advance of the time and form of an assessment. As this is a competency based training, outcome of the student assessment will be deemed Competent (C ) or Not Yet Competent (NYC).

Work placement:

The students are required to undertake at least 120 hours of work placement over 4 weeks in an approved and regulated aged care facility to complete the requirements of this qualification. Global International College will arrange work placement for students at an approved and regulated aged care facility and a location suitable for students. Students are required to completed assessment tasks and maintain a logbook throughout the placement.

What are the qualification pathways after taking the course?

Potential employment options are as a as a direct support worker in aged care, disability, home and community care or other direct care work in the community services industry.

Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the CHC52015 Diploma of Community Services and a range of other community services related Diplomas.

Is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) available?

Global International College has a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy, to ensure that an individual’s prior learning, achieved through formal and informal training, work experience or other life experiences, is appropriately recognised. This recognition may assist students to progress faster through a unit of competency, or allow the student full credit.
